Exercise machine

Abstract:

Exercising is made more comfortable and effective by providing a foot rest that has a front end which holds the ball of the user's foot fixed and a back end that both cradles the user's heel and allows the user to pivot his heel around the ball of his foot in a natural manner. The frame of the machine can be easily and repeatedly taken apart and put back together because it has two arms which mate at a connector that can be mated and unmated by simple pivoting of the two arms.

Claims:

What is claimed is:

1. A foot rest for use in an exercise machine comprising

a front end for holding a front portion of an exerciser's foot in a substantially fixed position, and

a back end for cradling the heel of the exerciser's foot, said back end comprising a cross strap which resists said exerciser's foot from sliding backward relative to said front end, said cross strap defining a window for receiving the heel ofsaid exerciser's shoe, so that said back end is pulled up by the heel of said exerciser's foot pushing against said cross strap, said back end being movable relative to said front end to permit the exerciser to pivot the heel of his foot relative to thefront portion of his foot.

2. A foot rest for use in an exercise machine comprising

a front end for holding a front portion of an exerciser's foot, and

a back end for cradling the heel of the exerciser's foot, said back end comprising a cross strap which resists said exerciser's foot from sliding backward relative to said front end, said cross strap defining a window for receiving the heel ofsaid exerciser's shoe, so that said back end is pulled up by the heel of said exerciser's foot pushing against said cross strap.

3. A foot rest for use in an exercise machine, the footrest comprising

a front end having a cross piece bearing a curved upward surface on which a front portion of an exerciser's foot rests while the user is exercising, the front end also having two side members that are connected by the cross piece in a manner todefine a channel, and

a back end that cradles the foot of the exerciser and includes a flexible strap that rides in the channel of the cross piece of the front end to accommodate feet of various lengths, the back end also having a cross-piece that includes a windowthrough which a portion of the heel of the exerciser may project so that when the heel is pulled up relative to the front of the foot, the back end of the foot rest is pulled up relative to the front end, the strap having a row of holes along its lengthand the front end having a post that projects through a selected one of the holes to fix the length of the footrest.

4. The foot rest of claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein said back end provides resistance to pivoting of said exerciser's heel.

5. The foot rest of claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein said front end and said back end are movable relative to each other to adjust for foot length.

6. The foot rest of claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein said front end and said back end are connected by a strap.

7. The foot rest of claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein said strap comprises a flexible material.

8. The foot rest of claim 6 wherein said connecting strap slides in a channel through said front end.

9. The foot rest of claim 8 wherein said channel is defined at least in part by two side members of said front end and a cross member which connects said side members.

10. The foot rest of claim 6 wherein said front end has a post and said connecting strap has a series of holes along a portion of its length which fit over said post to fix the position of said back end relative to said front end.

11. The foot rest of claim 10 wherein said front end has a protuberance which cooperates with a lip on said strap to resist said strap being withdrawn from said front end.

12. The foot rest of claim 11 wherein said post helps position said lip to abut said protrusion.

13. The foot rest of claim 1, 2, or 3 further comprising a strap to hold the front portion of said exerciser's foot against said front end.

14. The foot rest of claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein said back end cradles said exerciser's heel against lateral movement.
